My Favourite Way to Enjoy Live Music

In the Round Performance

My absolute favourite way to experience live music is the songwriters' round! I love both going to, and playing in them. This casual concert format allows songwriters to reflect on their inspiration and writing process, while also learning about how other musicians create. Those in the audience get an intimate peek at the story behind the songs!

Typically, one person starts a round with a song, and a little bit of insight into it. The next player will choose a song in response to the first, and talk about how they connect. They could be thematically related, have a similar origin story, evoke the same kind of mood, etc... Then the next person weaves another song into the developing-in-real-time setlist. When that round is done, another starts.

It's really interesting and a lot of fun to see how things unroll. I sometimes end up playing an old song that I haven't even thought about for years. I have been surprised to unlock new meaning in my words just by putting them in a different context. I am often so inspired that I go home and write a brand new song after the show. Anything can happen!

As luck would have it, next week I will be playing in the long running and highly respected Lucky Songs series, hosted by Ottawa music artist, Christine Graves. Rounding out the Round, is Suzanne Nuttall of Montréal, now based in Ottawa.

The event takes place Friday, April 11th at Meow! That's Hot. in Ottawa. More information, and tickets, available through Eventbrite (link below).

I would love to see you there! 💜

After some decidedly soggy acoustic events,  I finally got a sunny day for an outdoor gig! Spooky electric umberlune, with Boxcar on drums, ripped up the patio at The Mansion in Kingston.

Check out the videos on YouTube & Instagram to see it again, or to see what you missed. 😉 You're gonna love those crunchy tones coming out of my new Danelectro 59  Blackout! 💜

The News: Upcoming mini-tour with an Ottawa singer-songwriter. Details will be released soon...

What's Happening Now?

I got very excited about my Spooky Electric rock project; essentially electric umberlune with a drummer. We worked on new arrangements to draw out the punk rock energy. I loved getting more comfortable with being more musically aggressive!

But the long and short of it is I have not been playing enough gigs, and I miss acoustic guitar!  I'm looking to set up some solo acoustic shows, especially songwriters' circles, house concerts, and mellow intimate shows. Reach out if you'd like me to come and play for you!

p.s. There are still many exciting electric adventures coming up for me...

But, what does it mean?

First question I get asked: How do you say umberlune?

Here it is:                             uhm-ber-loon

Next question:                    What does it mean?

Here's the story…

One night when I was a child, I had the sudden and wonder filled realization that moonlight casts shadows. That might sound strange, but I grew up in cities (Montreal & Ottawa). If I was outside at night, there were usually streetlights, car lights, porch lights, etc… One fortuitous evening, however, while visiting family friends who lived way out in the country, I went cross-country skiing under the light of a full moon. I could barely take my eyes off my moon cast shadow, racing with me through the blue-ish, midnight snow. It wasn't that I didn't know that the moon, reflecting the sun's light, could cast shadows, I had just never really thought about it before.

Then I started thinking about it. A lot. For years, actually. It eventually occurred to me that the shapes cast by the moon's light simply could not be called shadows; it just wouldn't do. I put together the Latin words for shadow and moon, umbra and luna. I guess I'm a word nerd from way back!

Last question:                      Why do you call yourself umberlune?

When I started making music, I mean really writing and creating original songs, and started calling myself a musician, I just sort of knew that the name for that was also umberlune. It was a clear, distinct understanding.

 umberlune
